I have a group of three boys that can't seem to keep themselves quiet during class. I tried to split them up and they just worked harder to distract one another, distracting everyone else at the same time. I put them back together, and it seems to work do far, but I feel like they will cheat off of each other. They won't pay attention this way, either. I have a tiny room, so rearranging isn't really an option. It seems the further from each other I place them, the more of a problem they are. Any suggestions?

First of all, no don't do that. this is coming from a 15 year old, and I might not know much about adults but I know about kids and teenagers. If you write them up, they will hate you (trust me) and might be worse next time.
Second of all, have you tried explaining to them that if they don't pay attention in school they won't learn new things and will get bad grades. tell them, that it's for their own good. Don't split them up and literally tell them that you're not going to split them up. Then tell them that they are being disruptive to the other classmates who are actually trying to pay attention. Then you could talk to them after class if they still don't get it and be very nice to them. I've had many of my opinions changed about a lot of teachers who I thought were mean, but in the end they turned out to be very nice.
Teaching is not supposed to be about who gets in trouble for doing this or that, teaching is about not giving up on your students because you know they can succeed.

What grade is this? I teach HS and when I have these types of problems I talk with the kids. I send one or all to Time Out or In School Suspension. I have gone to guidance to see if I could get them split up into different classes. Sometimes moving one settles the other two down totally because if they see one go they know they can go too and they settle. Talk to guidance also and see if there is some support that they can offer.

You are exactly right that in cases like this, splitting them up is often worse than keeping them together. You need to let them know exactly what is and isn't acceptable and what the consequences will be if they cross the line. (Then enforce those consequences.) Also, it often works well to have lots of short activities. The boys may have a short attention span and be easily distracted. Doing a wide variety of things may help them stay on task.

Put 'em in the front row, RIGHT in your line of vision. If you have to move for a long period of time, move them with you. It sounds like a total hassle, but perhaps they will tire of it and behave. Lay it on the line, that as soon as they are willing to follow your rules and obey your directions, they will be out of the "hot seat." Until that time, they are "tied" to you! (they will probably think that stinks and behave...HOPEFULLY!)

Check out history of ADHD. This is a common problem with school age boys. Be sure to get an accurate diagnosis because this condition has been over diagnosed.

Write them up and send them to the office for disciplinary action. You will not win by being lenient with them. Make an example of them.
Your life will go much smoother.
