If you already have an Ethernet connection, then just buy a Wireless Bridge. You may need to also buy a LAN Switch (to allow you to plug in as well.)
Have a look at the price of both, as it may be cheaper to buy a new Modem with both Wired and Wireless connections.
As for the connection, You should not see any slow down at your wired end . The wireless connection, will be slightly slower but not by much!

You need to buy a wireless router, Linksys is a good one, and they have great customer service as well. Depending on the type of broadband connected you have , ie cable or DSL. They will be able to help you out.

iv got a laptop, im with ntl and have the same connection (the blue wire thingy) and iv been told that even though my laptop is wireless enabled i need to buy a router (around £100) and that enables the wireless connection, i doubt itd slow your connection but if you go to currys digital or pc world (highly recommended) they will be willing to give you more advice like they did me
also when you do go down dont forget to tell them who your connected with, for example BT,NTL, ect as this will determine which router you need
hope that helps
