I recently went to see the film Borat and have mixed feelings about it. While it was funny (if a little rude!) I couldn't help but find the racism etc. in it a little unnecessary. I know thats the whole point of the film but to me it seems a bit strange! Anyone seen it and care to comment?

I found the character of 'Borat' very likeable BECAUSE of his ignorance and the fact that there was no malice coming from him in his sexist/racist views. However, the film, as well as being absolutely hilarious in parts, also made me feel very uncomfortable as it exposed the more unpleasant side of human nature, i.e. most of the American 'hosts' unfriendliness, aggression, inability to tolerate Borat's 'difference' or see the funny side of his behaviour. I ended up getting the impression that the whole film was one massive mickey-take out of Americans and exposed most of those who appeared in the film as having double-standards and of being very hypocritical, dishonest and rather obnoxious. It wasn't Borat that I found offensive but how he was treated. But, like you, I remain a bit mystified and with mixed feelings that I don't entirely understand. Strange indeed!

I don't know how one could consider the racism in the movie unnecessary, as that's all the movie was. If you took out the racism what would be left? If there was a part of this movie which wasn't a nasty, mean spirited attack on people from Kakakhstan, I must had dozed off during the movie.

Its just a film, a good film at that, really really funny. Take it as it is, its just a laugh and a joke.
When Eddie Murphy makes fun out of a white guy, no body bothers because its just a joke, as soon as it is reversed or the joke is on another race its racist. You can be accused for being a racist for almost anything know and it is getting out of hand.
If anyone hasn't seen this film, go watch it, highly recommended.

Problem is they show all the best bits on the long trailers ive seen on TV! If they hadnt shown them it would of been SOOO much funnier! Besides he'll never beat Alan Partridge as the best characterisation from a comedian!

I think you missed the point.

It wasn't racist as such, it was making fun of racist people.

The whole thing was about a biggotted racist, sexist idiot, you were meant to laugh AT him.

I thought it was really funny most of the time, a bit miss in others.
Worth seeing.
