I like your comparison, lol. A life coach is like a mentor you pay for. Its a relatively new idea, but usually its in a specific area you want to work on. To my knowledge this field is yet to be regulated by anyone, so if you should want to hire someone, I would make sure you check them out thoroughly.

Recently, more and more people are hiring life coaches to help them deal with anything from eating disorders, to starting up their own businesses. It is similar to a parental relationship, in that the life coach that you hire should have more experience, or at least knowledge of the subject or issue that you hire them for, but without the issues that you may have with your actual parent(s).
