I broke a bone, it is on the side of my hand about a month ago. The doctor decided to put my whole hand in a splint. Today i got the splint taken off, and he showed me an X-Ray and i saw that the bone still has a little crack. It seemed to be in the right place, but i saw a small crack whereas i thought there wasnt going to be one. He said it is in the early stage of healing, and he cant keep me in the splint because otherwise my hand will become immobile. My question is if any of you know what the chances are of my bone healing, what i can do to help it grow faster or for it to properly heal, and finally, what happens if ithe crack doesnt mess together like im guessing its was supposed to( in two weeks) which is when im supposed to go visit him again, will i have to have surgery or what...

if you look at that diagram, i would say the metacarpal bones region. And when i went to the IR, and the Doctor they both said it was fractured, so i was surprised they didnt give me a cast.

It would help to know which bone was broken. A young person with a fracture will generally heal completely within 4 weeks which is why you are no longer required to wear the splint. Although evidence of healing may be seen after 4 weeks a visible crack seems peculiar. Ask the doctor to give you a copy of the radiologist's report as the radiologist should have seen both the initial and the 4 week later x-ray. If it was not read by a radiologist ask that this be done.

You should have looked closely at the xray. You would have noticed that the bones do not heal by "meshing" together, but by making new bone around the fracture. The break or fractured part will eventually disolve. You can ask your doc about using soft splint if you're having problems with weakness, but, you should do your exercises to strengthen your muscles in your hand which will, in turn, support the fracture. I think you're worrying waayyyy too much about this. Make sure your food intake includes recommended levels of calcium and in general, good nutrients. Wouldn't hurt to add a multi-vitamin; I'd recommend Dr. Taub's (find it online). Godloveya.

No surgery,it seems that it wasnt that bad to just be put on a splint, it will heal, if he took the splint off then hopefully he knows what hes doing, it could be what they call a stress fracture, is like a hairlike fracture, not tooooo big of a fracture to keep in a cast or splint, but it will heal on its own, but move the hand give it ROM (range of motion), just dont over do it. Was it that bad that he sent you for physical therapy/or occupational therapy? But dont worry about surgery. Good health :)

Its not uncommon for you to have cracks in your bone after breaking it even if its started healing. The can't keep it in one place for too long or you may not be able to use it correctly. Your best bet it to put ice on it, and try not to strain it for a while. Just be careful with it and you should not have any problem. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just be careful.
