If men are polygamous why are there equal numbers of men and women?

Surely there would have to be less men than women so there were enough women to go around.

Because polygamy has been fought against in favor of monogamy.

Also there are more women because men die earlier and get killed in conflict at a much higher rate than women

You have it wrong. Women outnumber men by about 2+ to 1.
