You're probably taking about Joe LeFors, one of the guys hired by Pinkerton as part of the super posse. (Joseph S. LeFors)
He was a real guy who used to track down cattle rustlers before he became involved in going after bandits.
He became an official U.S. Marshall in 1899.

Joe LaFors was, indeed, real. He was instrumental in bringing Tom Horn to justice, depending on your point of view as to whether Horn was guilty or not of the crime for which he was hanged.
