How are repeat patterns made on fabrics and wallpapers?

I am currently looking at repeat patterns in the world of interior design. I have been asked to research how they are made. I want to focus on things like fabrics, wallpaper and gift wrap. I need you answers to be very specific to each of the items.

I should imagine that nearly all repeat designs, whether on fabrics, wallpaper or giftwrap, are done with rollers going round and round, hence repeating the pattern, some, like in India, Pakistan, and other nations around there, do, do it, by hand, as they cant afford the machines.
