Could a fellow American please explain to me what Thanksgiving is please ?

In theory, it is a time set aside to thank the Almighty God for bestowing his blessings on us.
Signed by Washington on October 3, 1789 and entitled "General Thanksgiving," the decree appointed the day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."
In practice, it is a time to gorge, overeat and get ready for the next holiday

I thought it was the anniversary of when some of the first settlers brought in their first harvest making them self supporting
