Is the taste or texture any different? I have a hen turkey and I hope I got the right one.

Terry.....my turkey is 17.5 lbs and is a hen turkey so how could that be?

You did good! A hen is considered to be jucier and tastier than a tom turkey; a tom is sometimes a bit stringier and leaner.

The butcher gave you the right answer for sorting hens and toms in the store, but in the barnyard the difference is that the hen is female and the tom is the male.

Smaller birds (hens) tend to be more tender and flavorful, but all commercially raised turkeys are quite tender and delicious.

Any turkey under 15 pounds is called a hen anything over is called a tom. There is no difference Buy the size you need to feed the your family.

A tom is a male turkey and it tends to be dry and tough.
