Unless you signed papers that stated a date for starting, they will be upset but not mad. I am sure that they have a person that was second in the interviewing processes

Do not worry about the expense of the background check.

Think if you told anyone at your company that you will be leaving, if not do not say anything to the personal department.
If you already said to the personal deptment, tell them you are staying.
Give the other company an excuse- counter offer from your present company. but never apply to them again.

good luck, don't stress I am sure you are not the first person that change there minds.

First carefully weigh your decision. Do you think that you will ever want to go to work for this company sometime in the future? What has caused you to look outside your current company. Are you going to be happy staying in your current position or are you simply scared of starting over at a new job?

If you truly decide that you will be happy where you are then simply make a phone call to the HR person at the new company that hired you. There is no need to speak with anyone else. You can even be a chicken about it and send an e-mail if you prefer. Simply state the facts. You are happy where you are or this new company isn't the right company to make you change. Simply be honest and be done with it.

Also, this big company would have spent the money on a background check anyway. It's built into their budget so don't sweat the small stuff.

I have found myself in a similar situation. I just told them that I had been offered more money from my present company and I chose to stay with them instead of changing companies. Sometimes the company who has hired you will get upset because you have backed out of the job but most often they will not since they have other candidates waiting to take your place if you choose to back out. Don't get stressed over it.

1. Make SURE that you are wanting to stay at your current position, why did you look for a job in the first place?

2. Are you sure your just not afraid of making a big change?

3. I would both call and send a letter to them via-mail and apologize, this way you don't burn any bridges!

Why do you want to stay?

I would just tell them that your current company made you an offer you couldn't refuse, so you are willing to stay.

Make sure you know what you want before you say anything.
