He is what ever he or his fans need him to be.

He has often mentioned the Kryptonian deity Rao (a sun god if I recall) when he sees something that leaves him speechless. In the comics of late I know he went to a Catholic Priest once, to discuss his inability to save everyone. His origin story has parallels to Moses, his life story at times paints him as a messiah. 1993's death and rebirth story arc obviously invoke Jesus. In various media he has assisted Santa Claus with Christmas present delivery. His Creators were both Jewish teenagers, so one could infer that as well, and some one else has stated Kansas is majority Methodists, so assuming they are correct that is on the table as well.

To definitively state the deity would possibly alienate some fans who are not of that faith so I don't think the comics with ever go so far as to depict him as possessing a clear preference to any religion.

To be honest I am a Catholic (technically) so I most easily recognize the familiar so I could have missed far more obvious allusions to other faiths as well.

As far as Superman is supposed to be a Messiah-like figure, sure, there's a lot of religious symbolism in the Superman mythos. He came to an adpotive home from a "basket" like Moses and many other figures of ancient myth, he's god-like in many of his atributes, and he's a protector and saviour of mankind. I mean, even back when he died in the early 90's there was a cult in the comic book that claimed he'd come back from the dead and considered him a deity. And he DID resurrect after dying to save humanity. Sound familiar? But to me, he's got much more in common with the figures of pre-christian myth (religions), like the Greek demigods, Gilgamesh, Quetzalcoatl, Lugh, Cuchulain and such, than with anything modern western Christianity considers religion.

Absolutely.

Most comic book historians liken him to a Moses like figure (he was after all created by Jewish men), but personally, I see a lot of Christ like similarities in his character. Superman has mellowed alot over the years. He's a lot less commanding, and more like an average Joe with a heart of gold. I believe it's due to DC efforts to make him seem more human.

People have been making those kinds of comparisons since Supes was created.

He is an icon, so of course there are comparisons with mythology.

Superman has the power of a god.
Wonder Woman is the prodigy of gods.
And Batman is Pluto on Earth. A vampire who lusts after the blood of criminals.

Well the comics have a number of religious overtones. Too many to list here, but they include how Superman himself is a godlike (or Chistly) figure, the high morals he posses, the good-vs-evil aspect, yadda, yadda, yadda....

AS for the character himself? I dunno.... probally.
