depends on what kind of router you buy. There ara modem/routers available right now and if you happen to buy one then you wont have to use your adsl modem but if you get just a wireless capable router, then you would have to connect that first to your modem and you will be connecting your laptop or pc from there Ü

Your modem's job is to take the signal and switch it to something your PC can understand, then send it to the PC. But your modem doesn't know how to share. Therefore your wireless router will be the "go between", and share the signal to all your computers that are ready to receive it. If you buy a wireless modem/router, then you can get rid of your modem. But put your old modem in your desk, just in case your router goes down. :)

most wireless (WiFI) routers are just that, a router, not a modem. The modem will connect into the WiFi router via an ethernet cable that will plug into the WiFi router in the place on it marked WAN.
then you use the WiFi router to setup a local LAN. simple really, the printed instructions that come with the WiFi router are straight forward.

suggestion: contact the provider of the ASDL to insure that a WiFi router is compatible with your modem. Most are, but i have had problems with some.

think security security security, use the WEP at the highest setting for your WiFi security and privacy.

You'll still need the DSL modem. That takes the DSL signal from the phone line and converts it into a signal your computer can understand. The signal goes from there to the router, and then to your computer, so the configuration is

[DSL modem] ---> [router] ---> [computers]

Your router's documentation should explain this in more detail.

yes , your wireless is a door. Your modem is the front door. This is as simple as I can put it.
