I had cats in an apartment complex that did allow them, but for a huge pet deposit fee. I never reported that I had cats and never paid the deposit for them. Got away with it no problem. The only time I had an issue was when maintenance had to come fix something, and I just made arrangements for a friend to take the cats for a few hours just to be safe.

I really feel for people who want to keep a pet in an apartment where they're not allowed. Some people do get away with it (particularly if the animal is quiet and small), but I also feel for the animal.

Often, people who are hiding a pet won't take it outside for regular exercise (they're afraid of the landlord or a neighbor 'finding them out'.) I think it's best to try really hard to find a place that will accept your pet, for their health and well-being (and your peace of mind -- wouldn't you really rather be able to take nice walks around the block with your pooch?)

My fiance managed to have a rottwiler in a place that didn't allow dogs. She never barked.
