I wore cornrows as a little girl and I'm about to start wearing them again as a adult because I don't want to relax or straighten my hair anymore. When I was a kid, little boys and grown men didn't wear cornrows. I noticed a lot of guys wear them now. When did this shift happen?

i think it's inappropriate for men to wear them. That would be the equivalent of a whit guy in pig tails to me. Hooray to you for going natural but still recognizing the need to keep your hair pulled back. I have long, curly, frizzy, out of control hair and like it long but go to extremes to keep it pulled back b/c I think it looks more professional.

I know I am very late to the party, but there is some historical backing for men wearing cornrows, goes back to africa where men of high status, such as Kings, kings guards and warriors would wear them. Most dont know that, how long has it been appropriate? Id say since before 17th century Ethiopia (even the emperor of Ethiopia, Tewodros II or Theodore II wore them as well as Yohannes IVth)

Some hairstyles are for a specific gender and some aren't. Slowly cornrows have been accepted by society, but they are not a gender-specific hairstyle even though mostly young girls wear the style. It is a style for people with longer hair regardless of gender.

It hasnt.

Some of these guys are just wanting attention and a badge of belonging. Even though so many of them do it, i never would. My nephew claims he is expressing his individuality. But I tell him how individual are you if you are only doing it because everyone else is? Sadly we have become a nation of "let me put on or do what anyone on TV is". Punk rockers are at least individual & creative since they dont do things that all others do, like dye hair green & wear all kinds of strange stuff.

If you want to be an individual, than be one!

I don't know but I am getting a little tired of seeing it. Cornrolls on men are played out and they need to get a cut. I especially hate seeing the ones that dont keep it braided very well and it looks nappy. Time for a cut fellas. Even Ludacris has cut his.
