I am looking to buy a notebook, but my funds are tight, because Iv also got a vacation coming up.

What notebooks are out there that you would recommend?

A low price but nice quality. I dont need much more than internet capability, and video/cd usage.

Would anyone recommend refurbished?

Refurbished or used laptops will do just fine. I sell used laptops in houston, tx, and personally has been using a laptop that I bought used from somebody else since last year; it's still working like a charm, and I prefer Dell over HP, Compaq, or Gateway. IBM laptops are sturdy and great too, but I don't like the way they look.

Pentium 3 1.0ghz or 1.2GHz, with at least 20GB hard drive and 256MB will serve you well. And these typically run between $200 - $350. If you're shooting for this range, I'd recommend Dell Latitude C610 with CD-RW/DVD combo drive.

Pentium 4 or centrino will be faster and probably lighter or nicer in design, but they will be from $400 to $500. If this is what you rather buy, I'd recommend Dell Latitude D600 / D610.

I wouldn't suggest to buy from a used laptop store because their price is always high. Try to search for one on your local craigslist (www.craigslist.org), or eBay.

Its all about how much you can budget.
Personally I've had good experiences with used computors either through a local store or online.

My daughter has a lower priced Toshiba and is happy. I have a used Dell and am satisfied. Seems like ACER has lower prices but some do not like them (in fact everyone seems to have a different opinion). Try to get a service contract when you buy if if you buy new.

You could buy refurbished, the refurbished notebook computers work just as well as a new one. The only thing about buying a refurbished one is it already has peoples fingerprints all over it and skin flakes between the keys.

I have bought lots of refurbished items (not laptops, though) that have worked just fine and they come with the same factory warranty (usually). I recommend the Dell Outlet. I just bought a sweet Latitude as a scratch and dent special. They also have refurbs and returns. You can get the same stuff for a lot cheaper. You just don't have as many options.

Dell or HP/Compaq are reliable. They maybe cheaper at auction w/o sale fee.
