RPG. example:Xenosaga series. RPGs are like books. They have a strict story line, just like a book. Most people when they read, they become a character of the story. Basically saying they put themselves into the story as if it was them. As people play these type of games, and as they progress through the game, it becomes more addictive because the story gets better and better, and it makes you want to play until the end.

Extreme Sports. example:Summer Heat Beach Volleyball. These games are also addictive. While playing these games, you become addicted to it by once again progressing further and further into the game. As you keep winning, it makes you want to play even more so you may possibly win completely.

Racing. example:Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. These games are not as addictive as the other two mentioned previously, but are still addictive to quite an extent. As mentioned, progress is the main problem. By winning all the races makes you want to play more and more until you win the whole thing.

Addictive games:
Soul Calibur 3/fighting
Xenosaga Episode 1:Der Wille zur Macht/RPG
Xenosaga Episode 2:Jenseits von Gut und Bose/RPG
Xenosaga Episode 3:Also Sprach Zarathustra/RPG
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2/Racing
Need for Speed Underground/Racing
Need for Speed Underground 2/Racing
Summer Heat Beach Volleyball/Extreme Sports

On Xenosaga 1, Der Wille zur Macht means: The Will To Power.
On Xenosaga 2, Jenseits von Gut und Bose means: Beyond Good And Evil.
On Xenosaga 3, Also Sprach Zarathustra means: Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Many times when we have nothing to do we pick up somthing that is hands on or something that you can do very easily. Once you start this activity, your body seams relaxed and starts to tone it down. Then your brain focuses on this so much that it keeps wondering what will happen next. This is the part where you cannot stop. Your brain wants more and more.

It also depends on the game. If the game is simulating a real life experience and/or good graphics your brain will want to find out more, but if (for example) you play a very poor quality game your brain gets bored.

Think of it as; would you like to watch a television show that is grainy or would you like to watch one that is clear. It is basically what is more pleasing to the eye.

well to get addicted is when you are playing it hours and hours... because games are *cough*usually*cough* lengthy, the gamer wants to beat it. It may takes hours, days, weeks, or months, but they just want to beat it, leading to addiction. Also other addicting games are RPGs or some other online games.
To stop and prevent addictions just... STOP PLAYING! Go outside and have some fresh air and go to the movies with some friends or something!

enjoy

I think for some it's a way to challenge themselves, or to counter boredom, or to succeed. A lot of games are exciting, and some are actually difficult and you have to think hard about how to continue - strategy and puzzle games in particular. There's also all the pretty colours :D

EDIT: To they guy who said there is no gaming addicts, in Belgium or somewhere there is a rehab for gamers...

It's addictive because you know you could do better (or think so anyway) and want to see how well you could do.

Once you beat a game twenty times, it seems like a waste of time to play it again.
