Start off by writing from the heart - write about an experience you have had with a freind, where they have been there for you through a difficult time.
Once you have a first draft, post it on here again and we can give you ideas of how to improve it, but you need to have something to begin with!

So you have to write a poem for homework. Take this one and change it to suit you. If you practice a little I think you can probably write one of your own much better than this one.

Friends are people who stay around
Who pick us up when we fall down
Who send good wishes everyday
Who help us out in every way.

The best of friends may be far apart
But they still live within the heart
Say thank you for every friend
And the good thoughts they always send.

Best of luck.

First think about some of the things your friends mean to you. Doesn't have to be nice, as long as you don't name them!
Then decide on what style of poem you can handle; a rhyming one or a free style one.
Start writing and keep on writing.
Edit and delete, if you think there was something wrong.
Poetry comes from the soul. So listen to yours and don't worry about conforming.
P.S. Counting the syllables is FUN! I do it on my fingers and feel about 5 yrs. old again! But syllables don't apply to all poetry - just go for the rhythm and beat and some very personal lyrics. Don't know how old you are, but you must have some music that you listen to and love. Follow that beat, and keep out the bad words! Use a Thesaurus to replace them with with more beautiful and school-acceptable ones.

How about writing about a best friend who went
away and how you felt at the time?
To give you an example, here are a few lines
from Anna Akhmatova(a Russian poet) I was
reading yesterday(in rough translation):
I've stopped smiling
A freezing wind blows against my lips
One more hope is gone
But one more song remains
But I'll give this song back
to laughter and derision
Because loving silence
is so very painful to the soul.

How about this..... good luck with your HW

Thanks for being the friend you are
you're my best friend, an angel by far
everything in you is an inspiration to do great
and you'll be loved by all cause that's your fate!

It doesn't matter what you do or say
because you'll be my friend anyway
I know the real you that's down deep inside
and in you, I'll always confide

So never stop being the real and wonderful you
cause God shines through in all that you do
and whenever it seems like I'm never there
remember this: I love you and I'll always care!

A friend in need is a pain in the rear
But even so, I keep you near
A friend with want is just a pain
But still I need to see you again
A friend demands, this I don't need
But still i look to you to lead
A friend that's true - rare find I think
But you're still here, my hidden link
A friend needs time I cannot spare
But what would I do if you're not there?

Just a quick one for you. Good luck if it gives you some ideas.
