The Pilgrims did indeed have turkey to eat but they were small gamy birds- not like the butter balls of today.They also had chicken pie and several other goodies.
Besides, we like Turkey.

Actually, eating turkey on Thanksgiving kind of evolved from the original feast. Pilgrims may have eaten wild turkey but more likely they ate goose and venison as it was more readily available in New England. Fruit in New England was scarce and vegetables were a bit more bountiful. Probably no pies and sweets as the only sugar the early settlers had came with them from England.
