It's probably to do with tribalism - everyone want's to belong to something, even if it is the act of not belonging.
Fashion is a good belonging signifyer, it shows that you are following the norms of your tribe, even if you do look like a berk.

A deep psychological need to belong to a something and not be the outcast. Dont follow fashion and let the shops dictate what you should wear. People should wear whats comfortable and sod eveyone else!!!!!

Because people see celebs wearing something e.g. skinny jeans or boho skirts and they sub-conciously beleive that if they buy the same clothes, bag, mascara, whatever, that it will transform them and they'll be as pretty as so-and-so or as skinny as whats-her-face or as fanciable as whoever...that, my friend, is why people follow fashion not style
