The first English colony in the New World was the colony of Roanake. I believe one of the financiers behind the colony was Sir Walter Raliegh. I do know the first English child born there was named Virginia Dare and her grandfather was one of those who returned to England for more supplies and was late returning. When the supply ship did get back to Roanake, the colony was gone.

Second colony was Jamestown.
