Working in IT 4 years and I feel like i have hit a deadend

I have extensive windows and Unix platform knowledge , but mostly gained through personal study , I do not have a lot of hands on system administration type experience . Cant move on without experience , cant get experience without moving on ...

I am currently managing tier 2 support for a financial services company , and I have multiple industry certifications . but cant make that step to tier 3 without taking a huge salary drop ( going in as a junior ) , or without said experience .

The good bit is that you have experience. I would get some certs too as some of those hiring like to see them whether you think it really indicates ability or not. So the usual A+,network+, MCP,MCSA.MCSE etc and whatever your specialism is (mine was citrix). If you could get some documented project management experience then that would give more opportunity to "shop around" in terms of pastures new. There is, apparently another skills shortage in some areas of IT.Obviously IT is another profession where ageism also plays a part.

Continually expand on your knowledge base. IT is one of those industries where the goal posts are continually changing, and if you can show a capacity to keep up then you'll soon be recognised. But, as with every other industry, you have to prove your worth out there on the pitch, too: you have to earn progression by either making or saving your employer money. That's what it all boils down to - so start thinking "outside the box" and build yourself a personal niche.

A degree doesn't really say much hey... explore other professional courses and certifications that have industry recognition. You just need to know what field you are interested in and I promise you... with IT you just cant hit a dead end.

For lists of courses etc... a nice easy way to look is to goto a site like Transcender.com. Look right at the bottom of their website for the various certifications.

Get a level 1 helpdesk spot. You might be bored but its a good stepping stone. Also go for either A+ or MCP certification.
