Simpler. We didn't have as many 'things' as we do nowadays. For example, I have a sofa, loveseat and two chairs in my living room. When I was born in 1952, my family had only a sofa in the living room. We didn't get a television until I was in 4th grade. My grandchildren have televisions in their rooms, there is a television in the family room AND their parents have a television in their bedroom as well. No tapes - 8 track or cassette. No CDs or DVDs. No cell phones. A comfortable family owned ONE car. Every neighborhood had a vacant lot where all the children hung out building forts, tree houses and playing softball ... and it was safe to do so. On television, couples slept in twin beds and their kisses were pefunctory. You couldn't say penis on television - nor any of a host of other words the censors have approved in the interim. Milk came in bottles. Santa brought ONE gift each. Young girls wore petticoats and were covered from their neck to practically their ankles and it was still considered sexy even thought their boobs weren't all but exposed. Children were respectful, not just of their parents but of their teachers and if you got in trouble at school, your parents weren't marching to the next school board meeting to demand your teacher be fired for disciplining you. No, if you got in trouble at school or at someone else's house, you got a DOUBLE portion of punishment at home. In the 50s you knew if you screwed up it wasn't the fault of your parents, educators or society. And the list goes on. It wasn't a bed of roses, but it was absolutely nothing like today.
