Without researching it, I would guess that long ago, a lot of people didn't get the opportunity to go past grade school, so the privileged ones went higher. My high school was on a huge hill, so I grew up thinking all high schools were high on a hill, therefore "high."

I'm going to treat this seriously, unlike some others. You have primary education (elementary school, some middle school {or junior high school}) that teaches you the basics of education like writing , basic math, etc. Historically, this is what most Americans had as a education. High School is so named because it teaches "higher" education---algebra, chemistry, biology, literature, etc. based on primary education foundations. Typically this prepares you for college. Unfortunately, nowadays most colleges have to teach high school subjects to bring students up to speed.
