Is there a meter of some sort? Usually the 98% would signify the total amount of the used space. I am not sure though. I know yahoo and gmail both use the % as the used space.

If you're using Yahoo Email, it likely means that you are using up 98% of the 1 GB storage space on your Yahoo email account. You should be able to open up your various folders, and delete some email to make room for more (Inbox, Sent, etc.)

Space in the computer is measured by bytes.
thousand bytes is a kilobyte = KB.
thousand kilobytes is a megabyte = MB.
thousand megabytes is a gigabyte = GB.
That means that your email service has 1 gigabyte of space for your messages. The messages that you don't delete are kept in that space.
1 GB is A LOT of space.
Just to have an idea, in one gigabyte you can hold up to 200 songs or TONS and TONS of text and images.

It may indicate either the percentage of the space you have occupied OR the space you have free.

What's all the confusion about?

98% of 1GB simply mean (1024(MB)x 0.98 = 1003.52MB). It's nearly the whole amount!! Clean up mate!!!

It means either how much space you have used up (in which case try deleting your old emails once in a while) or, how much space you have left.

It means you're using almost all of your alloted quota. You need to delete some of your old messages (particularly ones with large attachments) or your account will stop accepting new messages.
