A PayPal ID is similar to a computer user name. It is a pseudonym for a real name for security purposes. Kind of like my Yahoo name Plezurgui. It goes hand in hand with a password to protect your bank account. If someone wanted to access your PayPal account and your ID was your name, such as Joe Smith, then people could steal your trash (Kind of like Chuck Schumer's people illegally accessed financial records of Republican Michael Steele seeking anything which could help their campaign against him) and otherwise learn passwords and account numbers.

Paypal is a funds transfer service owned and operated by the eBay online auction company. Anyone can take out a Paypal account for free if they provide the with their details, plus a credit/debit card and bank account details. They can then use Paypal to pay for things or transfer cash to other people with a Paypal account. Most eBay users like people to pay using Paypal.

The advantage for both buyer and seller is that Paypal acts as a trusted third party. If you deal with lots of eBay sellers or other websites, you don't have to give everyone your credit card details. This is much safer and its quicker, as you don't have to enter your details for every purchase, just your Paypal ID and password. Paypal keeps you informed about purchases via emails.

See link to sign up.

Your paypal ID is simply your user name with the paypal service. Much like a username for any other web based service. This is the id that people would send money to if they are sending it to you via the paypal service. It is also the ID you would tell someone is yours that you are sending money to.
