What materials can I use to assure that it won't fall apart in a couple of weeks. Planning them for xmas gifts, would like them to be functional.

You can take a strip of vegetable tanned leather, line it with some lining leather (pig skin, deer skin, etc) with either a pair of magnets in between, or a magnet, strip of thin metal (like a worm drive hose clamp)
Either sew together, lace, or contact cement.
The outer (vegetable tanned) leather can be tooled, stained, etc.
Check out www.tandyleather.com
They have a list of local dealerships/suppliers.
