It seems that lots of you (pretend...?) to believe it's his accent - BUTNO...!!! This has NOTHING to do with any accent...! This is about a man who just CAN'T READ a simple 3-syllable word...!!! Instead of "Nuclear" - (NU-CLEE-AR) - G.W. completely fails to recognize the 2nd syllable and so pronounces it as "Nucular" - (NU-KU-LAR)
Frankly - I think The US President suffers from dislexia...! Which means he can't READ properly.

This is not just mis-pronouncing a word - like we all do, from time to time... This is a man who thinks he rules the world but who REPEATEDLY looks at one word - the SAME word - a simple but very, VERY important word - and just can't get his tongue around the fact that this word's ONLY letter "L" occurs in the 2nd syllable - NOT the 3rd...!
Handling that is NOT rocket science - NOT down to accent. It's just plain ol' - same ol' - DUMB...!!!
Unless he has dyslexia - in which case he's to be sympathized with, sure - BUT let's hear about it...!!!

sure is funny how dems have problem with the way people pronounce words but then say they arent elitists. You have to say everything like we do but no.... were not elite...

Look at how 90% of the people on Yahoo Answers spells. If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, nothing will - these people will be running the country someday.

I'd rather hear someone pronounce things differently than misuse words because they have NO idea what they're saying. "Neocon" is misused quite often - for some reason, a lot of people use it to mean "Conservative" which is WRONG. Talk about dumb. Or the person I saw using "waisted" when she meant "wasted". Why pick only on the President? You could have a ball playing language police right here on YA.

You should be careful not to inject bias when asking a question. With that said, there are many words that are pronounced differently within the United States and between other English speaking countries. The infamous line "you say tomato; I say tomahto" comes to mind.

This is not an indication of a person's intelligence level. Instead, it represents the diversity of the English language.

As for the proper way to pronounce "nuclear," one must understand that what is consider "proper" is highly subjective. What may be a proper pronunciation in one social group may be improper in another. I have heard other people pronounce "nuclear" the way the US President pronounces it. This pronunciation is also listed in the Mariam-Webster dictionary as an alternative pronunciation (but not as an "acceptable" alternative).

The case isn't that the US President doesn't know how to pronounce "nuclear." One could argue that he is, in fact, pronouncing "nuclear" correctly within the context of his region or some other social group.

Neither did Carter & he was a nuclear engineer. I've long suspected that Bush has a slight speech impediment.

hummm - tough question!

Lets see - The President is a jet fighter pilot who, on his last flight, landed on a carrier. His behind the scenes diplomacy got Libian leader Daffy Kadify to give up the Iraqi nuclear program being run in Libia. His policy has been to kill terrorests where they live and breed and he's gotten thuosands of them. He got two excellent Supreme Court Justices in place.

Maybe he's from Texas and you are a New England Liberal. It's a well known fact that New England Liberals look down their noses at the rest of the USA.

That's my guess.

Why dont you put yourself in his position? How much public speaking do you do in front of thousands of people and reporters? I imagine on any given day YOU mispronounce many words. Give the guy a break! No matter how you feel about his politics, he's the one who must stand in front of everyone and talk about complicated subjects.

I'll listen to your crap once you've spent a day in his shoes.

Get over yourself.

Good luck and Goddess Bless!

It depends on what part of the country your from. Yankees from Boston say it one way, Texans say it anotherr, and yes, California says it anothe way. Just because someone doesn't talk like you do, pronounce words like you do,doesn't make it right or wrong.

I was listening to a professor giving a lecture on Nuclear Medicine procedures and he pronounced it " nu-clur". He was from Chicago.

I guess you are calling Jimmy Carter dumb because he said it very funny, without the "l". Southeners just talk with a different accent.
