It's amazing how many people believe this. Republicans have NEVER advocated a draft; they don't support it now; they didn't support it before the Invasion.

Apart from the self-righteous arrogance of your response, you're factually wrong as well. Many Republicans aren't rich in the least (like family and I). The military is composed of people across cultural, class, and economic lines. (And even if they were poor, should we degrade their contribution to our national security? Perhaps they serve regardless of their poverty.)

And you don't understand Republican arguments against minimum wage. If you did, you'd know they DO care about the poor!

** "The poor are enlisting at demonstrably lower rates since 9/11. Specifically, the percentage of recruits from the poorest one-fifth of American neighborhoods declined from 18% in 1999 to 13.7% in 2005. The reverse is true for recruits from the wealthiest one-fifth of neighborhoods. They are now overrepresented, accounting for 22.8% of all recruits. "

** "Household Income of Recruits -- We found that recruits tend to come from middle-class areas, with disproportionately fewer from low-income areas. Overall, the income distribution of military enlistees is more similar to than different from the income distribution of the general population."

I have tried to tell people that if you read, only the very liberal of the democratic party talk about a draft. Its usually floated to get people scared to vote for them, and not the republican party. The draft was started by, you guest it, the Democrats in the 60's. Was phased out and sits on the side lines, used as a football in the political game of life.

Skerry and his statement that slapped every person who wears a uniform in the face, has raised the bar. A majority of people in uniform are very educated and many do have college under their belts. Besides, most of the liberal democrats went to college and took classes like, " Knitting 101, Protest songs 102, Being an Oxygen Theif 103, to keep from going to Nam.

I would not support a draft, unless we were headed for a total world war like in the past. But I still think Congress would hold off cause people would be streaming to the recruiters to sign up,

A (liberal) friend of mine told me this when I came to work this morning - I honestly cracked up. What happened to the big, scary Republicans wanting the draft?

I personally think we should require EVERYONE to serve their country, much like Israel and a few other countries do. It would certainly make things equitable and ensure that the wealthy serve with the poor. Besides, it wouldn't hurt anyone to realize that the world really doesn't revolve around them.

"Only minorities" in Iraq? Really? That's funny - most of the guys I know who are there or have been there are all white from middle-class backgrounds. Don't believe everything you read on Moveon.org!!

not one of the above I served in the army in the 80's and ninety's so i don't see them wanting a broken down old salt like me lower back. The deliver classification i exchange into on are all decommissioned and maximum are on the backside of the sea or razor blades by utilising now. besides the undeniable fact that, i could recommend my childrens to enlist or connect ROTC (in the event that they have been in college) so as that they could have a selection of what to do with their provider. not serving isn't an selection. Cowardice and self-protection did not make this united states of america, sacrifice to something greater beneficial than your self did.

Yes. If, by 'they', you mean all the Democrates running for political office in the last Presidential election.

Lets be real clear - Republicans have said 'NO DRAFT, NO WAY, NO HOW". Period. End of debate.

As Rangle has said, over several years, this is a purely symbolic stance with no chance (he has said even he would vote against it if it had a chance of passage) of passing.

Dems accused Reps of planning to do what the Dems were planning all along. Any one who is surprised by this needs to wake up & pay attention more.

This is the first and only plan of the Democrats, and it stinks. First they say they want to fully withdraw. Now they want a draft. Do they know what they want?

It would have happened either way. The 2 party system is bogus. 100% pure bull. How can there be 2 opinions, when they're all bought and paid for by the same corporations?

Republicans don't want a draft because then it means that their rich kids will have to go and actually fight the war....now it's mostly minorities that are over there, and Republicans dont care about them. No money and they probably don't vote.
