Do they have a "right"? Not legally.

If when they hired you part-time they thought it meant at their convenience, then yes, they will want to know.

After you have already started working, you are going to risk being fired if you are not available when the employer needs you to work.

In the future, you should do what I have done for part-time jobs. At the interview, when they say, "are there any days/times you don't want to work" TELL THEM. Or better yet when applying for a part time job, put right on your application/resume the hours/days you want to work.

That way, they know from the get go that you won't be working on certain days. They can than choose rather to hire you or not.

Generally speaking...Yes.

Non Union-IF you are on a floating schedule and have assigned days of work and assigned days off and you want to take a day off that you are scheduled your employer has a right to know why you are not coming in.

Union- If you are in a union some days are considered sick days and you may be asked to provide proof you were sick (doctors note) other days are personal days and you generally do not have to give reasons for your absence unless by contract it is required.

Generally speaking though if an employer wants to know why you can not work it means they suspect your absence is not what your stating it to be, or, that they wish to pry into your personal business. Either way if you are non union you have no protection over this request and if you are union that request can only come under the provisions of your employment contract.

The employer can fire you if you don't work the days he wants you to work,.
If you are employed by someone there is a reason he is called "boss". You do his bidding.
To ask (not tell) him that you need to take certain days off with no explanation is unrealistic. You are hired because he needs those days covered. If you cant work them he will find someone who can

The employer might be more understanding if he knows the reason why, but you don't have to tell them anything about your personal life. You might loose your job, but you will keep your freedom!

no, but like the others said, they like it if you give them a reason! They can't fire you, especially if you are in a union. they might be able to give you a warning. I only work four days a week at my job, and they haven't said anything to me.

not a requirement,....but i am sure it is more likely that you should answer, mostly cuz they are your boss, and if you cant work certain days you should have some reason, unless you just dont want to!!

you don't have to tell them anything personal. but, for an at-will employer, they can fire you if they want to.

They have the right to ask, and to fire you if they don't like your answer.
