I'm with singular but not all cell phone companies have sim cards. Basically the sim card is a little chip that fits in underneath the battery. It stores all of you information like your phone book and phone number so that you can just plug it into any phone that it's compatible with and go right away. Also if your buddy has a phone and yours is dead you can just put you sim card in his and it's just like using your own.

I remember when I tried to switch phones before the sim card, it would take like 4 hours for my number to switch and to be able to use a different phone.

A SIM card is the card located in the back of GSM telephones (Cingular, TMobile, Vodafone, etc). The SIM card is actually what makes the phone work. Without the SIM card, you will not be able to make or recive calls on that phone. When phones come from a specific wireless carrier, those phones are locked to only accept that carrier's SIM card. When a phone is unlocked, it means that you can use ANY GSM carrier's SIM card in that phone.

NOW, the exception to this are CDMA carriers..... Verizon, Sprint, and Virgin Mobile. Or Nextel, who uses SIM cards, but has an iDen network.... so GSM and iDen SIMs are NOT interchangeable. If you have any of those carriers, you will not be able to use a phone that uses SIM cards.

And yes, you can back up your telephone book on SIM cards, but it only stores names and phone numbers.... for some reason, SIMs do not back up email addresses stored in the phone. It will only store to the phone's ROM.

I hope this helps!

Subscriber Identity Module card. This removable card is the chip inside a GSM phone with information such as the user’s phone number, phone book as well as other information related to the subscriber. The "SIM" card is an electronic card that is inserted into a handset and identifies the subscriber to the network. The SIM card contains the personal identification number of the subscriber and identifies the network to which the subscriber belongs

A sim card is the little card you put into your phone which contains your phone number and stores most of your information (I think?). I guess a locked phone would then be one that only allows you to use a sim card from one service provider.

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module, it's a small chip that is being used GSM providers (CDMA does not use SIM). For example in the U.S.., T-mobile, Cingular uses SIM capable phones.

If you want to buy such phones, they need to be 'unlocked', If unlocked, you can use the phone anywhere in the world as long as that phone supports the local GSM frequency. [in the U.S. it's mostly 1900 MHz, in Europe, Asia 900/1800 MHz]

"SIM" Stands for "Slapping Inbred Mothers." Therefore a "Slapping Inbred Mothers Card" is like a birthday card, however, when the inbred mother opens the card, a 6"x6" virtual hand pops out of the folded card and slaps her across the face. These cards are very popular in southern states, and even as high up as West Virginia.

A sim card stores your numbers, so you can take it from phone to phone (and not have to re-enter all your info and numbers like you used to have to when you switched).
