Hi, the local council is doing it's canvassing sweep-up of those of us who have yet to sign the paper work they sent out asking about who lives in your property, and whether or not you want to be on the edited version of the roll.

Why, if you do not wish to vote or receive finance do you have to sign this paperwork? It gets sold to companies no matter how hard they try to stop it. If I don't want to have all this- can I just not sign the paperwork? Am I likely to receive a fine? I pay my council tax so why should they care if I don't want to be on the electoral roll?

Thanks

The householder is required by law to provide this information. In theory you could be sent to prison until you do. However, about 10% of the population don't bother and there's not enough room for all of you.

Yes but that is irrelevant. If you are not on the register you lose your right to vote - and people who say they won't vote cannot complain at the government policies, cannot complain about council regs. There is a moral responsibility a0 to obey the law ( otherwise anarchy rules ) and contribute to the society you live in.

Yes you can be fined.
If you are not registered you will not be able to vote at Elections.
It is a legal requirement to register with a maximum fine of £1,000.
Many of the major credit firms check your address against the Electoral Register and you may be refused a loan, mobile phone agreement, mortgage, bank account etc.

You have a statutory obligation to confirm or correct the details in the cards they send through. A fine is enforceable if you don't.

If you tick the box to not go on the public register then it stays private and doesn't get sold to anyone else.

If you are 100% convinced it does get sold, then I'd sign it and sue when you see it being sold.

I usd to make my details subtely different when signing up to things. So if i them received mysterious mailshots i could tell who the sellers were. I've got a life since then though.

I've not been on the register for nearly 15 years now and never been fined or had any comebacks.

Also it's not true about getting credit,i've had no problems at all getting credit cards and loans from the bank.

They came around the other day all agressive, they asked me to put all the names of the people in the house, i told them nobodys going to bother to vote, they left. They can't do anything except probably take your name off the electoral register.

The Electoral Registration form does say you are required by law to supply the requested information.
So if loads of people refused then the government would have to do something about it.

The question was about signing not anything else, you are complying by providing the information but signing it is not a legal requirement IT IS NOT A CONTRACT

Yes, you can be fined. It's important for you to be registed, wether you vote or not - if you're not registed you then someone else could use your name and abuse your rights.

Also, credit reference agencies and the relevant authorities can access the information. If you're not on the register you can't get any credit.
