My hubby really likes working on bikes (bicycles) and has always dreamed of having his own bike shop some day. But he never has time to even build the one he's been working on since before we moved in together. Whenever we move, we always move half a bike :) So I was thinking that for his birthday I would buy him all the parts he needs to finish building his bike to help motivate him to work on his hobby more. Does that sound like a good idea or is it dumb?

Heebie: thatnks you're probably right about saving receipts just in case...we were talking about his bike building a couple weeks ago and he was talking about the things he needed to finish. I mentally took down everything he said and then wrote it down later and hid it so I would remember exactly what he needs

It would probably mean more to him than if you were to give him a million bucks.

I think it's a great idea... with one exception.
Instead of you buying all the parts, why don't you just get him a gift certificate. I would bet that part of the fun for him is picking out exactly the right thing that he wants.
It may not motivate him to work on his hobby, though. Maybe he just likes to tinker. If he was really, really into it, the bike might be finished by now. So, even if you get him all the right stuff, you can't get mad if he doesn't use it right away.
And... here's something else: if you ride, maybe you can find a weekend trip you can both take and plan that as part of the gift, too.
Good luck.

That's a great idea, and I would also include maybe a schedule/coupon(i know that sounds cheese) that would set aside a time that he could work. Like on a Saturday, write on there that on such and such day he will get to work on the bike, and you won't ask him to do any other chores or work during the hours of x to x. That way he has no excuse not to work on it, and he'll get the bike he wants and you'll get that half finished piece of junk out of your way.

I think it's a great idea, as long as you're sure that the parts you buy are the ones he wants. I'm guessing that if he wants to build it himself, he's pretty particular about what parts he wants in his bike.
Hang on to those gift receipts : )

I think that is a great idea. I think he would love it. Just make sure all the parts a returnable just in case in prefers something else. You could also get gift certificates as well.

That would be a great gift. And the reason that he WILL LOVE it, its because not only its what he wants but you are showing him that you pay attention to the details that he loves.
