By what stretch of the imagination could this be true? I don't know how everyone remembers the incedint but if I remember correctly, Israel was successfully invading Lebanon and destroying key infrastructure when the U.N. came between the two and stopped the fighting. The Lebanese lobbed missles at Israel, but never invaded or came anywhere close to forcing an Israeli surrender.

Why are there people out there trying to say that Lebanon won the war and that it's a huge blow to Israel? I'm not condoning the war in general, I just fail to see how or why people would spin the event as a Lebanese victory.

What are your thoughts?

It wasn't clear cut. There was no clear victory. However, you need to ask another question. Who ultimately benefit ted the most? I would have to say that Iran did. It was a proxy war. It really wasn't a war between Lebanon and Israel. It was between Iran and Israel.

Israel is less secure now because Iran has strengthened its strategic alliance with Lebanon and have been able to move more weapons closer to Israel. The real war hasn't occurred yet. We have only seen the beginning battle. Hopefully, the world will wake up and realize that the Islamic Fascists are determined to defeat Israel & the United States of America. Even if we did nothing and allowed Israel to be destroyed, the Islamic Fasicts will still attack until they have established Islamic Law and forced the U.S. to be an Islamic Republic. Islamic Law reqiuires women to be treated like cattle. Women become second class citizens. Doesn't anyone remember the Taliban? Women really should consider what is at stake. I wouldn't want my mother to be treated like dirt. Would you?

This is the truth.

If you enjoy your freedom and love your country, support Israel and stop radical Islam before it is too late.

Hisb'Allah has four ministers in the Lebanese government. Soon they may foment rebellion and take ove the country

The Israelis totally withdrew from Lebanon in 2001, and they withdrew from Gaza in 2005. The result is that Islamic terror groups quickly filled the vacuum. These groups continue to arm themselves for confrontation with Israel, in the hopes of wiping the Jewish State off the face of the Earth, and in violation of United Nations resolutions.

The summer of 2006 saw the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier by the Hamas terror group from Gaza, and the killing of 8 Israeli soldiers and kidnapping two by the Hisb'Allah terror group from Lebanon.

This was followed by bombardment of northern Israel from Lebanon, and southern Israel from Gaza, culminating in the Second Lebanese War, which ended without a clear-cut Israeli victory.

There can be no resolution of this conflict until Israel has a decisive victory over those terror groups.

Definitely Lebanon didn't win the war...but neither did Israel...The ones who scored a victory are Hezbollah...And as the Israeli say this was never a conflict between them and Lebanon,it was an Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, from which the ones who had more to lose were the Lebanese and Lebanon...
Israel's goal was to take back its 2 soldiers and to destroy Hezbollah...The soldiers are still in captivity and Hezbollah is more stronger than ever...So I wouldn't call this an Israeli victory...
It wasn't a Lebanese victory, but neither an Israeli victory...

Dear Josh,

First of all, let me make a small but vital clarification just to make sure we're on the same page: this was not a war against Lebanon as a state, but against Hezbollah, a terrorist organisation based in Lebanon. This is a crucial difference. Even though Hezbollah operates from Lebanon, the Lebanese government has no control over Hezbollah since it is funded and armed by Syria and Iran.

Israel lost because it was the one who took the initiative to attack with the claimed objective of destroying Hezbollah, and it failed completely to do that. Israel kept saying that hostilities would be over in a week, then in another two weeks, and then it finally realised that it was pointless to go on because no decisive victory could ever be achieved any time soon.

Israel seriously underestimated the military capabilities of Hezbollah and not only failed to destroy it - it actually strengthened it, because hundreds of innocents in Lebanon were killed in the process, thousands more lost their property, and now Hezbollah militants (exploiting a golden opportunity for propaganda) are all over southern Lebanon handing out free cash as compensation to everyone who's been affected by the Israeli attack.

As a result of this, more people in Lebanon are going to be won over to the cause of Hezbollah, and those who might previously have been neutral or friendly towards Israel will now harbour bitter resentment against it. In the meantime, Hezbollah can justifiably claim to have stood strong against the Israeli juggernaut and defended the people of Lebanon. This has been a huge moral victory for Hezbollah and all like-minded fanatics, and the Israeli offensive has had exactly the opposite effect of what it was intended to do. This is why it is a complete defeat for Israel.

The wider implications for peace in the Middle East are also disastrous. By destroying so much of Lebanon in its mindless attempt to ferret out Hezbollah, Israel has greatly weakened a friendly, moderate and democratic Lebanese government which was only beginning to find its feet after decades of Syrian occupation. To stay in power and avoid a landslide for the fundamentalist opposition, the Lebanese government will now have to take a much harder stance against Israel and the West in general. Bad news all round.

A crucial step in the Middle Eastern peace process is to get Hezbollah to stop its murderous incursions into Israel, but now, an emboldened Hezbollah which has successfully stood up to the mighty state of Israel will not be in the mood to make any concessions. Because Israel failed in defeating Hezbollah, when the US and the UK start negotiating with Iran and Syria in order to secure peace in Israel and Iraq (as there is now talk of doing) , they will have to do so from a position of weakness. The West will have to do plenty of bowing and scraping to extract even a modicum of cooperation from these two countries. Not a good prospect for peace.

Hope this helped,

I don't see why people would call it a Lebanese victory. But Israel definitely LOST propaganda points for "destroying key infrastructure", and their ground troops came out looking like they couldn't make much progress. Israel did not get it's two captured soldiers back.

I just think Israel was out of line. They went in Lebanon killed a bunch of people especially kids. They say they won, but Remember this all started when to 2 soldiers were kidnapped. I don't think they ever got them back. As far as Hezbollah launching rockets into Israel. What would you do if you were being attacked and had limited military capabilities. You would retaliate what with you had. Yes they launched rockets and killed some innocent. But its not like they have laser guided missile to attack military from civilian. Israel had these weapons and still managed to kill more civilians then military.

It's pretty much a matter of performance relative to expectations, and by this measure, yes, Israel lost. Of course, Israel can "really" lose only one war, it's last.

The Hezbollah cult is stronger now than before the summer '06 war. They just received another $300 million from Iran.
