i-pod is a music player made by apple.

Although it is commonly used as a generic term for all portable Music Players.

MP3 is a file format. MP3 player is a generic term which includes the I-Pod.

IF the target audience gets a portion of their music from iTunes (The apple music store) then get them a real I-Pod. If they don't (and don't plan to), get them a generic MP3 Player. It is cheaper, less prone to be stolen, and probably just as good (I like the Players made by "Creative").

And iPod is a "player" the mp3 is the music file that an iPod plays.

Think of it like this - the iPod would be the cassette player and the mp3 would be the cassette.
