I'm 31 and used to work as a male nurse but I gave it up because I didn't like it.Now I've been looking for a job for some time but am not able to find anything.Should I get back to my previous job that I didn't like or wait for who knows how long? The problem is that I'm fed up with staying at home but I really don't know what to do and am really depressed.

Is it that you didn't like taking care of people or you didn't like who you worked with or for? I am in Human Services and work collaboratively with a lot of nurses who have frequently changed jobs over the years, but have found a niche that they particularly like better than others. Some like the emergency/ hospital type thing, some the mental health/hospital thing, others like in home nursing, some like elder care/ nursing homes, and others like to work with children in homes or in a school, ect. Nursing is such a diverse field I'd think you could find something to do with your knowledge/education that you would enjoy. I too am 31 and have felt this same way in the past. I now have a job doing the same thing I was doing before, but for a new company and it has made all the difference. I realized I did like what I was doing for a living but I didn't like it at 3 agencies before I came to this one. And well, maybe it is time to move on to some thing new. I can't really answer this for you, but if you were a good nurse (which I'm sure you were), I'd hope you'd stick with it because there aren't enough good ones out there.

Do you know what kind of job you would like to do besides nursing? You could work part-time somewhere like Walmart or another retail store so you could make money and get out of the house while still having time to look for the job that you really want. Don't go back to a job that you didn't like unless you really have no other options and you need the money. That will just make you more depressed. Its possible it wasn't the job so much as the place where you worked. Maybe if you were a nurse somewhere different, you would like it more. Good luck.

Retrain. You must have other interests. Or alternatively you could get a job in a nursing home tomorrow. And probably promotion the day after, with your qualifications!

Beware of the boredom/depression cycle. A rubbish job is better than no job at all.

You should also consider a night class or regular gym/swimming pool, whether you're working or not.

If you keep active, you'll have less time to be depressed. And I'm not saying that lightly. It takes a huge effort at first, but your own endorphins are far more reliable than Prozac in keeping depression at bay.

Have you worked in different areas of nursing? There really are many options to explore when you have a nursing degree. Of course, this is assuming that you have minimum RN. If you do, don't give it up already...especially with the nursing shortage this country is experiencing.

Wow, male nurse's are in high demand and are paid well. You could look into specializing in a speciality field. You also could get a masters in nursing and teach.
