I could have sworn I read that this is a new version of the old movie Casino Royale, but I could be mistaken. Help me win the bet! Thanks.

Yes - in fact the "original" Bond film was Casino Royale but it sometimes isn't regarded as part of the true group of Bond Films that followed later. The original was made in 1967 and starred David Niven as Bond.

This story sets the scene about how Bond becomes a "double - zero" agent etc etc although the original was more about Bond being brought out of retirement for one last job

This is a question that has a YES and NO answer!

Yes ... there was a film with this title made in the 60's. But it was never part of the official James Bond franchise/series. It was a 'spoof' - a sort of comic version of the spy genre .., rather like the more recent Austin Powers films. It DID have a lead character in it called James Bond (played by David Niven). He was way too old for the part, and acted as Bond coming out of retirement! It was not hugely successful.

No ... the new film is NOT a remake of this comedy. It is an entirely new screenplay, being an adaption of the original book by Ian Flemming. Because the screen rights were sold when the early comedy was made, it has taken a long time for this book (one of the first in the series) to be made into a film, owing to legal difficulties when the Bond franchise tried to get the rights back.

The plots of the two films are totally different. They have nothing in common except their title and the name of the main character.

There was an earlier Casino Royale, but it was a spoof of the James Bond movies, not an actual 007 movie.

Casino Royale was the first James Bond book made by Ian Fleming. The 2006 Casino Royale film IS based on that book.

Yes Casino Royale is a remake. David Niven actually played Bond. Woody Allen is also in the film playing his nephew if memory serves. This one is basically a comedy.

Yes. The Original was a Comedy spoof of Bond based on a book the original Bond producers didn't have the rights to because it was originally shot for US TV with Bond as an American spy.

the 1st casino royale was a spoof on the bond image, it's been a long time since I've seen it, it was a sappy comedy with David Niven playing an aging Bond in retirement. I think it came out in 1967

No. It's the Bond movie they've always wanted to make. Based on Ian Fleming's novel, it takes us back to before he was a spy and tells the story of how he became one in a much more realistic way than all the other films.

no this is actually a book that has never been made a movie until now. This was the first book in the series of Bond, to explain how Bond became Bond.
