I live in the deserts of southern california.... and I read an article in local paper that says not to water more than once a month. But when I don't water for even two days, the leaves become brown, brittle and dead.

Because it's a desert, the temp is still in the 70-80s during day and 30-40s at night. It hasnt rained in months and it snows two weeks in february.

So how often should I water my trees??????

Water deeply but infrequently. Water should penetrate to a depth of 2 or 3 feet. Use a metal rod to check the depth you have watered to, it will slide easily through moist soil but will not penetrate un-watered areas easily.

When it dries out, re-water. During the summer this could be as soon as one week, but will vary. The frequency of watering will also vary as the seasons change. Deep watering encourages deep root growth and stable trees.

Be sure to water evenly under the entire crown of the tree at a minimum. Even better would be to extend your watering area beyond the crown, up to 3 times the width of the crown.

The tree will pretty much tell you. Make sure you cut off the bottom before putting it in the stand - add water (and a little sugar) - check at the end of the day and add water if needed. Check againin the morning. In the beginning it will probably take more, and then level out. Usually once a day is enough but keep it filled.

Depends.. If your trees are not native species.. Watering need will very greatly … and could be extreme

I suggest you replace them with native species and let nature take it course… watering during weeks of drought is advised on young trees but established plant should be able to withstand a few weeks of drought…

in the region where you live it is always best to water at night. If you water in the morning the leaves will absorb the moisture and when the sun hits it burns the leaves. this could be what is hapening here.
