A large factor in the Democrat win during the mid term elections was the management of the war in Iraq by Republicans. Most liberals want a complete and unrestricted removal of all US troops from Iraq. So why then is Charlie Rangel's plan for re-instituting the draft and increasing the number of troops gaining support from liberals?

Doctor Watson...

My comment was based on exit poll data. So no, personnaly I have not talked to the majority of Americans, I used the information already available. I'm not sure that your second comment about vets being Democrat or Republican is true because I haven't checked and it really doesn't matter in this particular discussion. Thirdly, you're wrong Military recruiting numbers, according to military recruiters are above expected. Goals are met monthly and have been for the past 10 years. Nice try though considering none of the "facts" you presented had anything to do with the question.

Truth seeker

He is considered part of the leadership and his proposed bill is gaining support in congress.... so while true, he is only one democrat it is also true that his idea represents a growing ideology for democrats. Nice try.

the liberals do or say whatever it takes to be the most popular. they rock at pushing each other out of the way with their elbows. BTW pelosi is losing this week even though its only monday. maybe tomorrow she will set up an investigative group to give us some proof of her most ethical congress ever.

First off, have you personally talked to a large enough section of Americans to know what 'MOST' liberals want?

Second, there are many more Democratic war vets in public office than there are Republican vets. Democrats, including your so-called liberals, have always proudly served our country. They always have and they always will. You stereotyping a certain segment of Americans is an insult to vets who've served their country.

Third, we simply don't have enough young men and women serving in our armed forces and recruitment levels are way below the norm. This always happens when we get involved in an unjustified, unpopular and seemingly unending war. Rangel knows enough to realize that an unpopular president conducting an unpopular war keeps enlistment figures below average, and there are enough other intelligent Democrats who also understand this, liberal or not.

Actually, a universal military draft would probably be good for the country, though probably not very good for the military.
If you want a certain outcome, but don't want to be identified with that outcome, you can support a different more unpopular position to help assure the results you actually want. Then you can always point to what you supported and truthfully say, "But look, I supported this other position."
This is one of the finer arts of politics and part of the reason that politicians are universally disliked.

Typical wishy-washy democratic "solutions." Liberals are famous for throwing something out that the American public thinks is a good idea, however the liberals do not have a plan that will work and do not understand the social and economic processes occuring that make knee-jerk reactions a really bad thing.

That's like asking why does John McCain actually use his brain while Bush does not. Just because they're from the same party doesn't mean they subscribe to the same beliefs.
