It's an argument that has gone on for a long time and will probably continue to do so. I am gay and have always known that I was right from an early age. Although at that time I did not recognise it as being gay (in any event it was illegal when I was born) I did recognise that I was different. I was never interested in girls so always hung out with boys. I hid my sexuality for over 30 years and believe you me, life was hell. The day I came out was the best day in my life and I now live with a partner who I love with all my heart and we are very happy. I know that I could not have been anything other than gay so in my view 'you are what you are' and can do nothing about it. To those who may disagree, I say 'try being something you are not for a day and see how hard it is'.

I think you are born with the predisposition, maybe it is written in our genes, and environment can play a factor. Look at Cliff Richards - screaming queen, but will he come out of the closet? No! Because he is a Christian, and according to the Bible, it is wrong. So sad, he could be having a whale of a time!

Besides all this, does it really matter, they are happy, and I'm happy that they are happy, and they aren't hurting anyone or anything, nor do I find it disgusting or immoral. It is perfectly natural. Nature has made them that way, maybe it was a response to over population, or the threat of over population.

And, to the person who said that we are all born hetero and that is why het sex feels good, ask any gay person and I am sure that they will tell you that anal and oral feels just as damn good to them!

Also, there are species in the natural world who indulge in homosexual practices for fun, and it is perfectly natural to them, so why not us?

Well I'm a Monarchist, so i believe in hereditary Inheritance.
I don't agree with gay marriage, because it simply isn't the right thing. In the case of the Monarchy could you imagine a gay Heir to the throne? it simply wouldn't happen because you must have children that are your own in order for the succession.

I know I'm going to get called Anti gay and racist and all that, but I know i have chosen the right choice in what i believe in,
God isn't gay nor was Jesus, nor is any member of The House Of Windsor, you should take an Example from the Royal Family.

I don't agree with Gay people.

Thats a hard one!
Nature and nurture arguement!
I believe, for me that is I was born a lesbian I can remember having a HUGE crush on a girl went I was abot 6ish and I didn't know about striaght or gay then!

But I do believe it can come from peoples enviroment as well, if a woman has had a particually difficult time with a man or men (rape, domestic viloence) I can see why they would become gay but I don't know if they are truely gay

Difficult one that

I'm straight and the way I see it is this:
I could not chose right now that I were suddenly only going to be attracted and fall in love with women. There's nothing wrong with being attracted to the same gender, but MY gender doesn't do anything for me. Why would anyone believe that a gay person chose that when a straight person can't? I think people are born gay. I have several friends that are gay and they all "knew" when they were just children. To believe anything else is absurd and ignorant.

I think it's down to nurture rather than nature.

I went to an upmarket boy's school as a heterosexual, surrounded by tough lads who had fights, went on cross-country runs, played cricket, got caned by the headmaster, made things in the workshop and showered in ice-water.

At the age of 14, I started playing Rugby on a muddy field, and I hated it until the games teacher showed us what a "Rugby Scrum" was.

Well that was it!

All those lads bent over and wrapping their arms around each other.....I turned gay immediately.

Men and women are definitely not born this way. I believe some that say are born that way had their 1st encounter with sex or love with the opposite sex and it fulfilled on into later life. Some others are influenced by bad company and often experment and get caught up into a gay lifestyle.

I could say...

"Are straight men and women born straight or are they influenced by their environment and surroundings?"

Please... why would anybody choose to be gay?

I honestly do not know why straight people think it's 'easy' and a 'choice' for gay people... consider yourself, as a straight person and all the straight people in the world... could you 'choose' to be somebody you are not, gay? I do not think so...

Gay people are born like so just like straight people are...

I think we place too much on environment and surroundings. People form the ghettos have gotten educations and become successful, "well bred and advantaged" people have failed or become criminals. I was raised with four brothers, by the same parents, in the same schools and for the most part with the same teachers. All of us had the sme religious and moral backgrounds and the same exact ipportuinties in life. One of my brothers is gay, the rest of us are not. How could environment cause that? I think everything depends on individuals, whatever makes them tick comes from within.

Actually what you are saying is a debate that has taken years to be resolved. Some just say gay people are confused, influenced by TV, or parents problems. Let me explain.

There are several theories as to why a person is gay/lesbian. The most prominent I have read is a work by Simon Le Vay (1974). He determined - through autopsy - that gay men and straight men have one single difference: the size of their hypothalamus (a gland in the middle of your brain and well known to be the source of sexual stimulation in human beings). With gay men it is small and fluffy were as in straight men, it is solid and large. He repeated this experiment with lesbian and straight women and found the reverse. Straight women had small/fluffy gland were as lesbian has large/denser gland.

Following years of studies, he determined that this gland is developed before birth. When he examined pregnant mothers during period of pregnancy he found that this gland gets developed during the 6th month of pregnancy. If the mother body thinks she has a daughter, she would give Oestrogen (female hormone). If she thinks she has male son, she would give Testosterone (male hormone). For some un-explained reason, the mother would give the wrong hormone. Depending on how long this hormone is given, the child may come up as Bisexual, straight acting gay guy, camp gay guy, or in extreme cases transsexual (a person who believes he is in the wrong body!).

In the animal kingdom, we assume something similar happens. Homosexual animals have been proved to exist in Lions, Zebras, Bulls, Dolphins, Dogs, and many other animal species. I saw a documentary on National Geo graphic called 'Wild Sex', focusing on this and other unexpected trends in the animal kingdom. For instance, gay/lesbian swans are known to mate for life! In another documentary that I also happen to see was shown on TV 4 about two years ago called 'Gay animals', discussed an experiment on a gay bull in Texas. They isolated the bull during the mating season, so as to make the animal desperate for sex. Then they released him to only 10 cows. As much starved and agitated for sex, the bull would only bully the cows but would never mate with them. They even tried to force it to mate, but would not work. Two weeks passed and nothing changed. Then they released another bull hoping the gay bull would learn, and as expected the gay bull would only try to mount the straight bull! Gay animals have been around for many years, but traditionally were only explained these animals are just confused! Like many people still think about humans. I doubt a gay lion had an over powering mother, a gay dog had a abusive father, or a gay zebra was corrupted by TV! It is nature and gay people are born gay.

To be fair, enviroment has some influence. Not on gay people but on bisexual people. Some bisexual have 50\50 percent interest in both sexies...clearly the environment has some influence- mostly to turn them straight. And if you are wandering how a bisexual man/woman hypothalamus would look, well it is medium size/denisty, they got mix of hormones and thus they would like both.

Regards,

Dr. FS
