On Dshehera and Dhunteras, our family(mother) did use some leaves to do Lakshmi Puja. It may have been Basil leaves the florist in India call them Sona Pan or Gold leaves, the closest thing in USA is Aspen leaves. I suppose in different local in India people may use different leave, usually what is there the most.
Most rituals give peace of mind to the believers and as long as it does not hurt them or do no harm to any one any way it is fun. Usually I look forward to eating sweets on those occasions.

Hey sweat lady it is up to u that u believe in these things or not becoz it is not sufficient to keep basil leaves to u , hard work also needed in every way. basil leaves has religion importance so people has faith on it. But hard work is must dear, If this is possible then no body do hard work & keep basil leaves to them & every body become KARODPATI. then no poor people found in ur city.

Sweet Lady ur in 21st century n i'm surprised u still believe in such superstitious things.
Theres no scientific reason for such things, lik vastu, feng shui.
All good things happen jus b'coz v believe that its gonna happen.
Believing in God purely is good n completely different from believing in man made customs
