Hey Florida fans are you upset your team played Carolina eastern college and that may have cost you a chance to play for the BCS title? Seeing how if Florida scheduled some good out of conference teams they had a shot at finishing #2 but now if USC wins out they have no shot. Or will you just complain about how tough the SEC is and how you should have scrimmages for your non-conference games? The truth is the reason USC is even able to make it to the title game is they play a tougher schedule. All Florida had to do is schedule tough out of conference and if they win they were in. If I was a Florida fan I would be screaming to play tougher out of conference.

Auburn is not a great team this year and Florida lost to Auburn by 10. USC should be penalized by losing to Oregon St. but their two wins against conference leaders more than offsets.
Let's not forget that Oregon St nearly beat LSU a couple years ago if not for a couple missed extra point attempts and that was an Oregon St. team that had a bad record. This Oregon State team could still finish in the top 25 if they win their next 2 games and bowl which is possible.

Sigma B that is exactly what I'm talking about. You can try to maximize your chances of getting in by playing good out of conference teams like USC does or sit back and complain how life isn't fair. I know if I'm a Florida fan I want to maximize my chances.

This is endemic throughout college football and not just with Florida or the other SEC teams. USC is a rare exception, being a team that plays usually very tough non-conference games. Colorado by and large is another exception, but way too many teams schedule non-conference games like Florida does.

Simple reason for this is that too many people look at the win-loss record and not who you played, and too many of those people are poll voters. So, there is really no incentive for teams to go out and schedule tough non-conference opponents. The old bowl system didn't reward it, and neither does the BCS. I don't believe having only an 8-team playoff system would reward it either, as it would place all of the emphasis on winning the conference title, so teams would still not need to play tough games out-of-conference. Until there is a 16-team playoff, where there are no automatic bids or there are enough at-large bids to make schedule strength an issue, teams will take the easy way out.

Fans should not only be pissed off that Florida playing Western Carolina may cost them a BCS bid, but that they're also being asked to pay the same amount to see their team play a bad I-AA team (WCU is 2-8) as they would to see them play a conference opponent. Do you really want to pay $40/50/60/70 to see your team play Central Upper Nebraska Tech? Or the South Harmon Institute of Technology? These kind of games make September football damn near unwatchable.

Until we start rewarding tough schedules and until fans start making the schools they cheer for regret playing the I-AA or Sun Belt teams of the world, it will continue.

And, I'm sorry, I've heard this "loss to an unranked opponent" for USC for way too long already. People, IT'S A 12-GAME SEASON, not a 1-game season. Look at the entire body of a team's work and not just who they lost to. I'd give USC a helluva lot more credit for losing to an unranked, but 7-4, Oregon State team than I would give Florida credit for beating up a 2-8 Western Carolina.

i think that it's important to have an easier game right before the SEC championship game and a bowl. and you have to remember that USC lost to an unranked team just weeks ago. and UF lost to a top ten team. So, I feel the real question is florida being penalized for playing one easy team in the late part of the season - when they blew them out of the water like expected.

Shouldn't USC be punished more for losing to an unranked team?

Auburn got punished by playing The Citadale in thier undefeated season and didnt make it to the championship game despite being undefeated.....im surprised Florida didnt take notice.
