Present effects are due to karmic causes from the past. However, future effects arise from the causes we make in the present.

Nothing happens for any particular reason unless we, or someone else wants it to happen. Reason isn't the be all of happenstance, direction of intention can cause effect but many things of a happening nature are random and without purpose at all. It massages our vanities to feel that all things need a reason, You may find comfort in considering that even the things that do matter to us matter not at all in the great big picture of this perfect chaos we exist in; if indeed we exist at all. In the philosophy of arguments, reason is the ability of the human mind to form and operate on concepts in abstraction, in varied accordance with rationality and logic —terms with which reason shares heritage. Reason has traditionally been claimed as distinctly human, and not to be found elsewhere in the animal world. Discussion and debate about the nature, limits and causes of reason could almost be said to define the main lines of historical philosophical discussion and debate.

Because without a reason, people feel confused and lost and scared. This prompts them to invent reasons for why things are the way they are. Religion is one set of answers, but science is the same thing because they are both trying to make sense of a universe that appears to be slightly nonsensical.

The light in your room only goes on 'after you flip the switch.'

Rain falls 'when the clouds become heavy with moisture and no longer can hold it.'

Your dog barks 'because he is happy to see you when you get home from work.'

Your clothes get clean 'after being laundered.'

A new-born baby cries 'if you slap his bottom.'

Nothing just happens!
