Since I live in KC I'll tell you how our teams got their names. The Kansas City Royals got their name by holding a essay contest back in 1969. The winning entry thought the team should be named after "The American Royal" an equestrian event that's held yearly in KC. The KC Chiefs football team are named after former mayor Roe Bartle who was known as "the chief".

Believe it our not, there are actually firrms that specialize in that sort of thing. I remember watching a special about 10 years ago with the Jaguars started about how they chose the name. It's very similiar to naming a product, like Rice Krispies or Snickers.
Sometimes it's simple and they use a local product - like the Houston Oilers. Sometimes it is to honor someone - like the Cleveland Browns. Sometimes it is to relate to another local team (The Chicago Bears were named because the Cubs were already so popular)
It just depends on the city and the circumstance. Many cities now have a contest to see who can name the new team.

Hey, great question. I'm guessing, they do a survey of the city. say there will be a team called the "new york lions" well, they might do a survey around new york.
