Can I make a suggestion ?
Santorini is very beautiful, but is a relatively long way from anywhere else - so you could get stranded here in April if the weather changes.
If you go to Rhodes, you can get the Dodecanese Express catamaran (very fast, very comfortable, quite cheap, and very reliable) which runs from here all the way up the Dodecanese to Patmos and then all the way back again. There is also the slower and smellier Nissos Kalymnos car ferry which sails in just about any weather, plus the hydrofoils, etc.
By doing this, you can take in many very interesting islands. The catamaran (from Rhodes) stops at,
Symi (sometimes)
Kos
Kalymnos
Leros
Lipsi (sometimes)
Patmos
Please see attached link 1 for a 2005 schedule and link 2 for information on other ferries working in the Dodecanese.
By doing this you can get to see 7 very different islands without wasting a lot of time in travelling between them.

Okay im speaking from experience here: This summer i spent almost 2 months in Rhodes and another 2 weeks in Kefalonia for my aunt's wedding. And have heard a lot from other people about the other islands both from friends and actual greek people From what i can tell Rhodes is the place where you could spend the most time doing things other than just hanging out on the beach. It has a great history with lots of ancient artifacts. Theres the medivel castles to visit and a ton of shopping to do. I had a great time and there was always something to do. It has some surprising things there such as a huge waterpark and a huge casino. It also has a great night life in Faliraki and "bar st." and is a huge tourist island. Its very close to Crete and Santorini if you would like to visit those too while your there. The beaches there are GORGEOUS. Pure blue and you can see down to the very bottom. I feel its the best balance of fun and relaxation mixed with history and architecture I would suggest that you do not go visit Kefalonia. Although it is very beautiful and also has gorgeous beaches it is mostly a small town island and not many people go there to visit as tourists. I know when we were there people gave us looks because they had never seen us before. It is not that populated of an island but if your looking for authentic greek living on an island it is a good choice. Crete and Corfu are also good for historical trips but i never heard much of them as far as beaches and leasurely time goes. As far as santorini its hugely touristic and is more like visiting a caribean island in that its lost a lot of the greek feel as it has been turned more tourist friendly

monemvasia is not really an island but i have been there and i know it was perfect. i haven't been to the other islands but I've heard they are nice too. monemvasia is picturesque and it used to be a fortress. the view of the wall is outstanding. so is the the view to the sea from the wall. there is a small village in it. i liked it very much when i went there. i suggest you to visit monemvasia. especially at summer it is the best holiday destination

it depends on what ur looking for... monemvasia, NOT an island, but it is a veryu picturesque village, with a lot of things to see in the vicinity, and a really nice natural environement..
now, for in island, i would propose Alonisos.. it is not very well known by foreign people, but it is well known among greeks... it is said to have the crearest sea in the aegean that's why the monachus monachus seals, make it their home... and indeed i remember the clearest waters i have ever seen!!

If you have time, visit all of them, they are wonderful!
If you have limited time, concentrate on the islands of the Aegean Sea, like Santorini, Paros, Naxos which are rather close to each other...
Have a nice trip!
