It depends.
Geographically majority of Turkey's territory lays on Asia, however there is substantial amount of land on European continent.
Historically, despite having a love-hate relationship with Europe, Turkey's modernization is based on westernization since its foundation.
Culturally, it is a heterogeneous country with lots of European, Mediterranean, Middle-Eastern and Asian characteristics. In some parts of the country, one can hardly differentiate between, for instance, Turkey and Greece in terms of music, food, traditions. In other parts, it resembles lot more like a middle-eastern country.
Politically, Turkey has a candidacy agreement for membership with European Union. It is part of OECD and NATO.
In terms of religion, majority of population is Muslim, yet a big portion of it is secular.
Moreover, Turkish sport teams play in European cups and Turkish musicians compete at Eurovision Song Contest. News related to Turkey is categorized under European section for BBC.
So, the question is who and for what purpose does categorize Turkey as a European, middle eastern or Asian country?

It is not the only country that lies between 2 continents, Egypt lies between Africa and Asia. 20% of Turkey is in Europe, the other 80% lies in Asia. If Turkey were not in Europe the EU would never have started negotiations for entry into Europe,
