very good question, i have some columbian friends who think columbia is so great, but they live here???? i mean they are from a country where pretty girls can't walk down the street alone and if they do you probably won't see them again, I'm planning on going to Europe next year to see where my ancestors came from but i'm full blooded American for sure

because poverty and strife are nothing to be ashamed of. if that's where you came from, it's going to be a part of you for the rest of your life so there's no use trying to erase it from your history. you should be proud of yourself and your heritage. that poverty and strife is what gave you the drive and inspiration to seek out a better life. it's what gave you the skills and the strength to fight for what you want. it's what helped make you the person you are today, and unless you're some lowlife piece of ****, that's definitely something to be proud of.

Although there is poverty and strife, there are still good people like themselves and their families that live there. You can still have pride in your country, not because of the how the Government runs it, but because of the good people that occupy the country.

Huh,
I think that it's the culture that they're proud of and not necessarily the government or economic institutions that sent them packing to come here.
I also think that it's a way for people to make themselves sound more exotic. I guess that calling yourself "American" is not cool enough. You have to hyphenate it with some other nationality.

I think most of us are proud of the country in where we have born and live, independently of where we can go to live... I live in the country where I was born, but I know that if I'd emigrate to other country I would be proud of my origin and my culture...

Because here in America, we believe in hypocrisy. It just wouldn't be hypocritical enough for us to complain about people from Mexico and Central America retaining some of their allegiance to the country they were from without us doing it, too.

I'm half danish, (My mother) and I'm just in love with Denmark, th culture and the people.

Additionally, we here in America don't really have a national identity like the Europenas do (at least not historically) so we cling to our heritages.

Not a bad thing in my opinion.
