Walking at home is safer than walking outside, and you can walk longer distances in a single location while doing other activites.

But a friend once pointed out the irony this way, that we invent machines such as elevators and escalator and vehicles to take the work out of climbing stairs and getting places; but then create other machines, such as stationary bikes, treadmills, and exercise machines, that create work out of going nowhere. So the two machines cancel each other out.

Clearly the point is time and convenience. In both cases, the machines are used to let us CHOOSE where and when we want to expend time and energy. Some people watch TV, read or catch up on cell phone messages while they exercise at home. So the point is time management and convenience, and also security from crime risks.

Some people have muscular conditions for which running can be painful or indeed inadvisable.
It would also reduce the impact on a knee or ankle injury.
I should imagine some people would like to do some CV work WHILE they are at the gym and choose not to run for whatever reason.
What would be wrong with someone running to the gym and then not using the treadmill at all?

Its a not easy question to respond to. Neither workout will construct muscular tissues on your legs (you will could desire to accomplish a little style of resistance preparation (weights) for that), so no concerns approximately getting thicker legs. Getting thinner legs relies upon why your legs are too great on your concepts - if its muscle or fat. If its fat then regular artwork outs will do this - you could not loose fat from a particular portion of your physique via working that section, the fat will bypass from throughout. What you're able to do is look on the device itself, many have calorie counters on them and you will see what share you utilize in half-hour working and how many in 40 minutes strolling - learn the two and spot that's extra useful.

The same reason why people row on a rowing machine...
To get fit!

You can set the running machine to a pace that you have to keep up, so you don't get lazy and amble instead of power walk.

Walking and power walking is just as good for your system as running. Plus a lot of people either don't like running on them or just want to speed walk. What's wrong with that?

Walking is good cardio and if you like to walk but live in a cold place then you use the treadmill indoors. What's the big mystery?

In my case, I broke my back and running causes too much impact strain in the permanently damaged area. However, my sports centre has a padded running track which I can use .

I agree, although it's probably worth starting with walking and building up to something a bit faster in time. I guess it also depends on the weather outside :)
