Time was not "invented" as it does not really exist. It is a purely human mechanism for managing our lives.Outside the human framework all other organisms live "now" there is no yesterday or tomorrow in their conciousness. Of course they learn things and use that knowledge at a later date, but don't confuse that with having a concept of time.

The origins of our current measurement system go back to the Sumerian civilization of approximately 2000 BCE. This is known as the Sumerian Sexagesimal System based on the number 60. 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour - and possibly a calendar with 360 (60x6) days in a year (with a few more days added on). Twelve also features prominently, with roughly 12 hours of day and 12 of night, and roughly 12 months in a year (especially in a 360 day year).

The first people to accurately log and record time were the Sumerians(Mesopotamians) in about 3300BC, over 5000 years ago. They invented writing and mathematics, and used these to chart the stars, movement of the sun etc. They created the concept of Hours days, weeks and months, astronomy etc. They were before the Egyptians by about 300 years, and well before Greeks, Indians, Chinese, Aztecs etc.

All good answers, but time as we understand it today is a product of the industrial revolution when assets had to be sweated to derive maximum return and therefore time was segmented into 'unnatural' portions, unlike before which were attuned to the seasons, day, etc.
