We won the war, but the occupation is not going very well. I don't think we are in control of the borders and I believe there is a nearly endless bunch of fanatics willing to blow themselves up to get at our troops. Most people would agree that something needs to change.

Do we increase troop presence and try to control the borders. Provide more man power to fight/locate terrorist/insurgents? - I've heard several intelligent politicians and veterans offer this as a best option. However do we have the man power and resources to do this and would this just result in more American deaths?

Do we leave Iraq and allow them to decide for themselves? - Maybe Iraq is a lost cause and we should avoid more American deaths. The problem with this option is that we admit defeat and Iraq becomes a breeding ground future terrorist.

I fail to see how I answered my own question. I discussed two options and am torn between them.

Hitch - Were does the extra troops, money, and supplies come from? Also, how successful will we be with enlisting help from other countries in the Middle East? I doubt Iran, Syria, Lebanon and several others will want to help us.

Divide and conquer. Stop all incoming border crossings. Partition off Iraq by religious beliefs. Patrol the borders between the partitions. Let each partition have it's own government and security forces.

Negotiate construction of a permanent U.S. military installation (air base) in the Kurdish region to maintain a military presence. Offer economic aid to Turkey (so the Muslim government there will not be too put-off by our allignment with the Kurds). Begin withdrawing troops and redeploying them to the U.S. border, airports and shipyards (to maintain security). And re-structure the guard to create new full time positions (including pay scale and benefit changes) to help with the recovery efoorts in New Orleans.

The guard can be pulled out of Iraq and re-deployed to domestic positions that support national security. Don't buy into the rhetoric "cut and run."

We increas our troop levels to secure the borders and to train the Iraqi police, and weedout the corruption. then we have a diplomatic mission to the rest of the middle east to enlist their help in keeping iraq safe. We need to guard against the insurgents. the only way to do that is with increased troop levels, a clear definition of victory and time tables for when each objective should be accomplished.

Leaving Iraq has never been an option. Must be done.
Now in the enormous mess, it is not possible to leave immediately. There would be never-ending carnage.
The various groups of Iraq do not seem to be able to come to mutual agreements, either.

Seems to me the only person who can bring order and stop carnage is Saddam. Restoring Saddam would immediately free us.

Time to leave. Iraq has been at war for 3,000 years, and the US is not going to change that.
